Vernon mayor and council are about to get a pay raise.

City staff presented a remuneration report at the regular council meeting Monday, Oct. 23.

According to the report, the Council Remuneration Policy, amended Aug. 15, 2022, established a policy for an annual increase in pay for the mayor and council members.

“As per the policy, the base rate for council is set at $2.44 per capita effective Nov. 1, 2021. The base rate increases with population growth,” the report states.

The report says the consumer price index (CPI) is calculated on the base rate at a four-year rolling average, which is 3.7 per cent and equals $4,150 for Mayor Victor Cumming and $1,535 for council members.

“The CPI is added to the base rate which in this case adjusts the Mayors salary at $112,776.17 and Councillors salary at $41,727.18,” the report states.

The new salaries would come into effect on Nov. 7.

There is an anomoly that council has requested clarification for at its next meeting.

“The $2.44 per capita is based on population, as your community gets bigger you make more money,” said Patti Bridal, chief administrative officer. “The remuneration wouldnt really go up until the population increases.”

The report can be seen online in the City of Vernon council agenda.
