The Vernon Flying Club will host its Discover Aviaition event for youth aged eight-to-20 Saturday, June 22, at the Vernon Regional Airport. The club is creating a wait list should any of the already filled 100 spots open up.

Air travel passengers who pre-purchase their tickets have an option of making same-day changes to travel plans if seats are available on a desired flight.

It's called Flying Standby.

The Vernon Flying Club has created a standby list for youth aged eight to 20 for their highly popular Discover Aviation event, which is set for this Saturday, June 22.

"We filled our 100 spots in very short order but we always end up with extra seats, and it looks like we will have a number available this year," said event spokesperson and pilot Rob McDicken.

Discover Aviation is the club's way of introducing interested youth to the world of flying, and includes a free flight with one of the volunteer pilots around the city.

Those interested, said McDicken, can get their name put onto the wait list, which will be used to fill up any cancellations.

"This wait list will remain active up until late in the day on the 21st (Friday) at which time it will expire," he said. "Due to the fast-paced and dynamic nature of Discover Aviation, during the event we will need to be able to fill any available seats on a 'on demand' basis. As a result, we will not be able to honour the order from the wait list. On the morning of the 22nd we will start collecting names for the day's standby list. This is where your next chance comes in."

Discover Aviation starts at the Vernon Regional Airport at 8 a.m. Saturday, though McDicken advises to arrive early to try and get a seat. The event runs until 12:30 p.m.

To get your name put on the wait list, call McDicken at 250-306-0526 or email disc.av.vernon@gmail.com for more information.

"The best thing is for parents and their junior aviators to show up at the flying club Saturday morning," said McDicken.
