B.C. Olympian Cassie Sharpe crashed during qualifications for women’s freestyle skiing – halfpipe.
Sharpe went down on her second run in the qualification round on Feb. 19. She was in contention for a medal, having medalled in two previous Olympic games.
Medical staff attended Sharpe, as the crowd silently watched.
“The crowd overwhelmed with shock and disbelief” said commentator Mike Atkinson on CBC.
Sharpe seemed to be moving her legs, based on Kaya Turski’s commentary on CBC.
“I’ve been there in the pipe when Cassie won gold, and heard the most triumphant of yells. I was there when Cassie crashed in the X Games and had that terrible knee injury. I’ve seen her through the highs and the lows, and the one thing it boils down to is the warrior mentality to get back on,” Atkinson said.
Sharpe was removed from the halfpipe in a sled and managed to wave to the crowd before being taken to hospital.
“She is in stable condition and is being evaluated by COC and Freestyle Canada medical staff,” said the Canadian Olympic Committee in a statement Thursday (Feb. 19).
The two-time Olympic medalist from Comox, B.C. has qualified for the finals on Sunday, though it is not yet clear whether she will be cleared to compete.
Sharpe grew up in Comox, and first started skiing at Mount Washington. She won gold in 2018 and silver in 2022 in this event.
The other Comox Valley-based skier in the competition Dillan Glennie crashed during her second run in qualifiers as well. Glennie lost a ski, and was able to ride out of the venue.
