Tinder-dry conditions led to five fires in a week in Coldstream.

The fire department was kept busy with the blazes, mostly burn piles that got out of hand.

“We’ve had four brush fires that were ‘near misses’, any one of which could have become a much bigger problem, plus a structure fire, which is always a challenge,” the department reports.

The region is experiencing unseasonably low moisture, approximately 60 per cent of normal for this time of year, according to the department.

“And, it’s not looking like that’s going to change before the weather warms up for real.”

Coldstream and Lavington fire departments remind the public to be extra vigilant with permitted burn piles.

“Everything is tinder-dry already.”

Residents are encouraged to take this weekend to survey their properties and Fire Smart their homes.

“Everyone plays a part and, with your help, we can keep the District of Coldstream safe!”
